Has anything like this happened to you? Has someone said something on the Internet that has had negative implications on your career?

Managing Brand YOU! How are you monitoring your reputation on the Internet

How do you manage your career on the Internet?

When you go for a job interview, most people go to a bit of effort. They may buy a new suit, tie, get a hair cut or even polish their shoes. Everyone knows that first impressions play an essential when presenting yourself or your company.

In the age of new technology and mediums, do you really know how you are represented in the virtual world?

Do you or you friends have blogs where you would be mentioned in? Are you on Linked In, My Space, Friend Reunited or Facebook? Would a bio of you be on the company website? Have you been interviewed by media before? Have you won a competition, sporting event, or been part of a committee, charity or political organisation? Does your favourite Night Club or Pub post photos with names on their website of people having fun? Have you been in the social pages or gossip columns?

These are just some of the things that appear when a recruiter does an internet search.

Gone are the days when you could separate your digital communication from your friends and family with your professional life. There is too much intercross to ensure total privacy.

Googling yourself is an essential way of managing your PERSONAL BRAND?.

Rumor and gossip about you can now be on the internet. Something stupid you did or said can be recorded in the virtual eternity. Photos "tagged" of you drunk, doing drugs, in sexual inappropriate circumstances, we can see on the Internet.

From a recruiter's perspective, using the internet to research candidates is now a fact of life. Sue Bourke, Senior Consultant at The Talon Group said, "Be aware of what you and your friends put on the internet about you. Whilst we as recruiters use a 'grain of salt' with general information over the Internet, it can have an affect in how you are perceived from a professional perspective?.

"It is essential you know what your intentions are when you post things on the internet about yourself. It is part of the future of your career management that we are looking at your broader details when you least expect it".

What is your view?....Have you had this experience?.....
